  • Pre-ceremony photography in the Faculty Club

James and Alex on the stairs The bridal party and immediate family gathered at the Harvard Faculty Club at 3 pm for photography. Here is the bride and groom on the stairs in the main lobby.
Bridal Party on the stairs of the lobby This is the bridal party on the same staircase. Men, left to right: groomsman Andy Jones, best man and brother Edward Liu, groom James Liu. Women, left to right: maid of honor and sister Stephanie Bowers, bridesmaid Melissa Kurtz, bride Alexandra Bowers.

    Pictures at Swedenborg Chapel

Swedenborg Chapel offers a wedding ceremony lit by candles alone for the bride's entry. It's a wonderfully dramatic flourish, but it also means that there are no photographs of the heart of the ceremony itself.
Bridal Party waits for the bride This is a picture of the bridesmaids, reverend, and groom and groomsmen waiting for the bride's arrival. Left to right: Stephanie, Melissa, Rev. F. Robert Tafel, Andy, James, Edward.
Bride and groom ascending to the altar At the end of the bride's walk up the aisle, the groom steps down to take her arm and escort her to the altar.

First dance and toasts at the Faculty Club

Jimbob and Alex try to dance If there is any life lesson that I can impart to any budding grooms out there (apart from ELOPE!), it is: if you go into this with no ability to dance, make sure that:
    1. you take more than four weeks of lessons before trying to do a first dance in front of your guests.
    2. don't select a dance tune in a fast 3/4 rhythm. This is a Viennese waltz, which is the hardest type of fundamental ballroom dance for a beginner to do.
Bridal party plots the toast Chinese tradition mandates that the best man's toast involves embarrassing the bride and groom by relating the story of how they met. Here, we see Steph, Ed, and Andy preparing to humiliate us completely.

    Alex's dresses

Alex's dress in the stairs of the Faculty Club Alex wore two dresses on her wedding night. Here's the first one, a traditional flowy affair, on the steps of the lobby of the Harvard Faculty Club.
    Here's the back of Alex's Western-style dress.
Alex in her qipao At about 9 pm, Alex changed out of her wedding dress and into a qi2 pao2 (see right for the characters). This is a traditional Chinese, fitted silk dress. The brilliant shade of fire-engine red is a traditional celebratory color at Chinese wedding celebrations, and the silk is embroidered with the figures of dragons and phoenixes. The dragon is the king of the mythic beasts, and the phoenix is the queen, so the combination is associated with marital union.
Waiting for cake! This shows James and Alex (in qipao) eagerly awaiting the wedding cake.

Cake cutting and Alex in her qi pao

Death by chocolate mocha! The cake came from Rosie's Bakery, and featured a chocolate mocha core with a chocolate ganache covering. It was really, really good!
couple cutting cake The happy couple cutting the wedding cake. Aren't they cute?

    Party scenes

Dr. Tsai with a bowl of roses A lovely shot of one of the floral arrangements on the tables. The man in the background is Dr. Anderson Tsai.
dancing up a storm In the background, you can see some of the members of the band. Left to right in foreground are a few dancing fools: Mrs. Martha Bowers (bride's mother), Colleen Klotz, Sushil Singh, Kourosh Parham, and Scott Quick.
couple in the snow We had joked that it would be really nice if there was a little snow falling as people were leaving the reception hall. Well, we didn't just get snow -- we got fairy tale snow, in big fat juicy flakes. Here are Alex Hill and Tiffany Kurtz, out in the middle of the snow.

And they all lived happily ever after. The End.
